How to change your course in Australia

How to Change your Course in Australia?

As an international student in Australia, choosing a school, college, university or any institution or course is no easy task. After arriving in Australia you might realize that the institution that you’ve previously chosen, or the course you’ve enrolled in is not your best choice.

Get proper advice

If you decide to change your course or institute in Australia at any time, get in touch with Edugate.  Our consultants will ensure you have a smooth transition.

What about your Student Visa?

As an international student, your Australian Student Visa gives you the right to study, work, and live in Australia. You are not eligible to study in Australia without a valid student visa. As a result, changing your course or institute also requires you to understand the conditions and requirements of your visa.

Due to recent changes in student VISA legislation changing courses has been made more difficult.

It mainly depends on these 3 factors:

  1. The course you are studying
  2. How long you have been studying it
  3. The type of visa you currently have

Keep in mind that:

  • You may choose to change course you are studying for another course at the same school, or you may choose to change the school.
  • You can only change to a course in the same education level or higher. So you cannot change from studying a bachelor program to a vocational program. If you want to change course, you need to get a letter of release and then apply for another visa.

Check the courses and the different institutions now and find your right fit!

What you need to know about your financial obligations

Any Australian institution usually set a date each semester. This date is the final day when students can make changes to their enrolment without having to pay any financial penalty. Always keep track of that penalty ultimatum:

  • If change courses beyond this date, you will have to pay the full cost of each subject you already chose for that semester.
  • If you change courses or subjects before this date, you may receive a partial or full refund.

If there is anything you’re not sure about, feel free to contact us at Edugate.

Covid 19 Australia Updates Rules For Temporary Graduate Visa Application

Immigration Minister Alan Tudge announced “COVID-19 Concessions” to Migration Regulations 1994 to aid visa holders stranded outside Australia effective Sept. 19, 2020. This includes concessions for those applying for the Subclass 485 and Subclass 887 visas, aimed at international graduates and skilled workers respectively.

Although, the Australian government began granting student visas again in July but has yet to welcome international students back since it enforced COVID-19 travel restrictions. However, those who study online remotely can still apply for and receive a Temporary Graduate visa from outside Australia. This post-study work visa is a major pull for international students to pursue higher education in the country.

Here’s a closer look at the updates for Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa applicants :

Post Study Workstream

This visa is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution studying for more than two consecutive years. It lets you live, work and study in Australia, temporarily.

  • stay in Australia for between 2 to 4 years after you have finished your studies
  • travel, work or study in Australia during your stay

You must find your own employment while on this visa. We are not responsible for arranging employment.

Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) Visa Eligibilty

New requirements for temporary graduate visa for those who have been impacted by COVID-19:

  • online study undertaken outside Australia as a result of COVID-19 travel restrictions will count towards the Australian Study Requirement for existing and new student visa holders
  • graduates affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions will be able to apply for and be granted a Temporary Graduate visa outside Australia (where they have met all the requirements).

Online study outside Australia is counted from the time of Student visa grant. If you are applying from outside Australia you must hold or have held a Student visa in the past 12 months to apply.

Have This Passport or This Level of English Language

You can either show us that you hold a valid passport from the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, or prove your English proficiency by:

  • OET: At least B for each of the 4 parts
  • Cambridge C1 Advanced test: Overall at least 169 with a minimum score of at least 154 in each of the 4 parts.

Cost

  • The visa costs AUD1,650 for the main applicant.
  • There is also a charge for each family member who applies for the visa with you.
  • Subsequent entrants must pay the full visa application charge.
  • You might also have to pay other costs for health checks or police certificates and biometrics.
  • The subclass 485 visa is exempt from the subsequent Temporary Application Charge.

Apply From

  • You can be inside Australia but not in immigration clearance when you apply, and when we grant your application.
  • Graduates impacted by COVID-19 travel restrictions may also be able to apply for, and be granted this visa outside Australia.
  • Subsequent entrants can be in or outside Australia when they apply and when we grant them the visa.

You Can Apply Later than Six Months After Your Student Visa Expires

Applicants would no longer need to hold a student visa in the six months prior to applying for the 485 visa. Plus, you now have 12 months to meet the Australian Study Requirement for this visa type. This means you can apply for it within 12 months from the time you completed your course.

Bear in mind that all changes above only apply to applicants who were offshore for all, part of, or a portion of the period beginning Feb. 1, 2020, and Sept. 19, 2020.

TAFE Courses in Australia

Going to college is really overwhelming, and a huge part of it is the prospect of having to choose a major. Moreover, traveling to pursue your studies is also daunting. What is the right major for you? Which university or college should you choose?  What courses suit you best? As you try to figure out what major is right for you, it would be a good idea to explore TAFE courses, and most particularly TAFE courses in Australia.

Why Australia?

Choosing to study in Australia will provide you with wonderful opportunities and experiences, as well as world-class education. Here are five reasons why you should consider Australia as your study abroad destination.

  • Courses and institutions that enjoy global recognition.
  • A multicultural, lively lifestyle.
  • Affordable study costs.
  • Good career prospects.
  • Beautiful weather and stunning landscapes that add to the overall experience.

Tafe Courses

What are TAFE courses?

TAFE stands for Australian Technical and Further Education. TAFE institutes are government-owned providers of Vocational Education and Training, referred to as VET courses. The TAFE sector is the largest education and training sector in Australia.  Individual TAFE institutions are known as either colleges or institutes, depending on the state or territory. TAFE colleges are owned, operated, and financed by the various state and territory governments.

Each year, thousands of international students come to Australia to take advantage of the extensive range of courses and subject areas that provide practical skills and vocational training for a huge variety of careers in different sectors spanning hospitality, tourism, construction, engineering, secretarial skills, visual arts, computer programming and community work.

TAFE colleges generally award qualifications up to the level of advanced diploma. In many instances TAFE study can be used as partial credit towards bachelor’s degree-level university programs.

So, what is the difference between TAFE and university?

International students attend TAFE institutes to complete courses that range from certificate to postgraduate level.  This is how TAFE courses differ from university courses:

  • TAFE courses are practical: While university courses have an academic focus, TAFE courses are practical, hands-on, and focused on providing students with the most in-demand skills at the workplace and the training that employers usually tend to seek.
  • They’re hands-on: TAFE facilities provide students with industry-standard equipment that allows them to train outside the classroom, such as automotive workshops and training restaurants that are open to the public. TAFE courses are designed with industry needs in mind, and many offer opportunities to complete on-the-job training through work experience.
  • They offer a wider option for courses: Traditionally, TAFE institutes are known for providing VET courses (such as certificates and diplomas). Some TAFE institutes also offer undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (the same as those offered by universities), as well as English language courses and secondary school studies.
  • They are more accessible: TAFE institutes are accessible and have fewer entry requirements than universities. Because TAFE is more accessible to students, many choose to study at TAFE as a pathway to gain entry into university.

According to Study Australia, “TAFE is Australia’s largest provider of vocational education and training. More than 350,000 people have enrolled in TAFE in Victoria alone.”!

As an international student, enrolling in Australian TAFE institutes will give you a host of advantages by:

  • Paving the way to higher education.
  • Improving your chances of being accepted into higher education institutions.
  • Helping you gain practical, work-based skills to improve your employment prospects.
  • Helping you take advantage of the wide variety of courses on offer.
  • Allowing you to enjoy the individual attention that the typically small class sizes allow.

What would a TAFE course cost?

According to the Australian Government website, TAFE course fees range from AUD$4000 to $22,000 per year.

Higher-level vocational courses, including vocational graduate certificates and diplomas, could have higher fees. As for TAFE institutes that offer bachelor’s degrees, they will most probably charge higher fees for these courses.

Wondering about the entry requirements?

To enroll in a TAFE course in Australia you will need to meet a series of minimum requirements.

  1. The system usually requires students to have reached a level of study equivalent to the Australian Year 10, 11 or 12.
  2. Entry into some courses, such as art and design, may also require submission of a portfolio. Some courses may have prerequisite subjects or work experience requirements.
  3. A good level of English, although this will vary depending on what you are going to study and the requirements of the school.
